Become a Leader in the TESOL Professions
The New School offers an innovative master's degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages, developed by a team of international experts, with two concentrations, teaching and curriculum development. Our MA TESOL program is training tomorrow's leaders in this growing and evolving field. Scholarships and financial aid based on need and merit are available to all students.

A Degree that Opens Many Career Opportunities
English is the language of global communications, and demand for TESOL professionals is greater than ever before. Our graduates are working for universities and other public and private schools,* international corporations, governments, and NGOs, and in private practice in the U.S. and abroad. They are teaching English to people of all ages and conditions of life, administering ESOL program, creating new programs, and developing new teaching methods.

Join Fellow Educators from Around the World
Our MA TESOL students represent many countries. Many already teach English professionally or as volunteers. Others come from careers in business, law, the armed forces, social work, and non-profit management. These are people who understand the importance of effective communication in every walk of life. All are highly motivated to enter or advance in a field that allows them to work across borders and cultures and help others.

The New School faculty includes renowned TESOL professionals such as Jeremy Harmer and Elton award winner Scott Thornbury.

Study Online and/or On Campus
All students can expedite their progress toward the degree by taking up to four courses in an intensive summer teaching residency offered every year on campus at The New School.

Related Programs

TESOL Summer Institute
Working teachers of ESOL, regardless of their academic degrees, are invited to come to New York City for the TESOL Summer Institute, a two-week professional development workshop and co-curricular activities. (This is a noncredit program, not to be confused with the MA TESOL intensive summer residency.)

Certificate in Teaching English
The New School offers a five-course continuing education certificate program for aspiring or working teachers of ESOL for whom the MA TESOL is inappropriate or impractical. The courses can be taken for undergraduate credit or on a noncredit basis.

Occasional Professional Development Workshops
The New School offers a variety of short professional workshops for English language teachers as part of its regular continuing education curriculum. Go to the current continuing education course bulletin and look for English Language Studies.

*The MA TESOL degree does not by itself certify an individual to teach in public or proprietary schools in New York State. You can speak to a program advisor about the state teaching certification process.
